Is it better for offenders of minor crimes to do community service rather than serve time in prison?

 

You can use the following ideas we wrote in the classroom

Advantages=benefits=positives of doing community service

-offenders are given the opportunity to do something constructive and give something back to the community

-offenders acquire new skills/experience

-helping people boosts self-confidence

-helping people provides offenders with the incentive to turn over a new leaf.

-community service costs little, people do not have to pay for it

-most minor offenders become hardened criminals when they go to prison

 

Disadvantages=drawbacks=downsides of doing community service

-offenders do not learn from their mistakes if they clean houses/paint train stations

-offenders will not be afraid of committing a crime again because they know they can get away with prison

-some offenders commit minor crimes but they may be a danger to society and they must be kept in prison
